What to expect...

So yesterday Eric and I went on a date and saw the movie "what to expect when you're expecting".  I can't say it was an awesome movie- had way to many cuss words and un-necessary stuff, but there are some things that the movie did very well. 

It shows different women pursuing pregnancy- and some not pursuring pregnancy.  For example, there's a young woman who gets preg on a one night stand, one who has been trying for 2 years with no luck, one who wasn't even trying and gets quite the surprise, and then there's J-Lo.  Her character was SO real.  At one point she has a break down b/c she "can't do what every woman is supposed to be able to do" in essence she can't get preggers.  So instead they pursue the route of adoption from ethiopia.  Here's the great part- it shows her and her husband and the struggle of him not being ready.  It shows them going to the orphanage and seeing their son for the first time.  It shows her SOBBING in realization that THIS is her son when she holds him.  It is an amazing scene!  It even shows a family and J.Lo says to them- is this your first adoption?  Their response- no, it's our 5th.  LOL.  It's funny b/c it's SO true!  Once you have gone the path of adoption- you tend to do it again... and again ;) 

Other positive points of the movie- a character who is very self centered, a celebrity and kinda mean to his son admits that what really matters in life is not the money, fame, women, etc... but his children.  They are his legacy and what is the most important thing he's done. 

The "dudes group" is a group of dads who hang out and walk the park on Saturday mornings.  The soon to be adoptive dad joins the group b4 he has a kid, the dads talk about how hard it is to be a dad, financially providing, sex life going away, etc.  So it puts the fear of God into this poor man who has yet to become a dad.  He says to them- why would I want to be a dad when you say that parenthood is where happiness goes to die?  Chris Rock replies with how being a dad is the best thing in his life, how you never really know love until you have a child.  He totally talks up fatherhood and how amazing having children is. 

I'm watching an interview with J.Lo right now, and she said she never even thought about adoption until she played this role.  I hope it has that effect on many others!  She says she now understands how a person can take a child they don't know into their family and love them as their own.  It's wonderful that doing this movie has opened even J.Lo to the idea of adoption! 

So although I can't say it doesn't have a lot of crud in it, I did enjoy the message of the movie and the good points.  I'm just SO glad that adoption was addressed as a way of "expecting" just as being pregnant is.  I hope many more people walk away with that understanding if they see the movie.
